Pityriasis versicolor
This is a form of fungal infection of the skin that is not contagious but can be cosmetically bothersome.
What causes dandruff?
Fungi, of the genus Malassezia, which naturally exist on our skin, are responsible. Moisture, intense oiliness of the skin as well as increased sebum production contribute to its proliferation and then it starts to cause problems, but without the disease being transmitted from one person to another. It is also a form of dermatitis that occurs more often in teenagers and young adults.
The symptoms
The fungus affects the natural pigment of the skin and the variegated pityriasis manifests itself in small or larger spots, in a color lighter or darker than that of the skin. On them, the skin may show a thin peeling. Spots are concentrated on the trunk and arms and more rarely on the neck and face. Apart from these, it does not cause itching, irritation or other symptoms, but it can recur, that is, the spots disappear and appear again.
The treatment
Although it does not cause problems and discomfort, if left untreated, this fungus can cause severe discoloration of the skin, especially in the summer months when we "tan". By doing a clinical examination, the dermatologist will make the diagnosis and give the corresponding treatment, which may include creams, lotions, sprays or oral treatment. Fungal infection is considered cured in 4 weeks. Normal skin color, however, may take a few months to restore.
Is there prevention?
Good physical hygiene and regular showering if you have very oily skin on your body will help. Avoid oily sunscreens and prefer those in gel form and wear clothes made of natural fabrics that allow the skin to breathe. In a few cases, the dermatologist may also suggest prophylactic treatment with the occasional use of specific preparations.
