Androgenetic alopecia is a condition that leads to permanent hair loss (alopecia) and is related to a genetic background. It can apply to men and women.
It is the most common form of alopecia in men. Hair thinning starts from the front line of the forehead and temples which can coexist with thinning in the center of the scalp. As it progresses, it may reach the whole head, usually except for the back of the head (occipital region) and low sides at the temples.
Although it is more common in men, it is a condition that can affect women as well, especially after menopause. The pattern of thinning in women is different and involves overall thinning of the hair and thinning of the hair on the top of the head.
Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic disease and it is believed that the predisposition to it is hereditary. The action of androgens on the hair follicle is involved. It can start at a young age, from the 20s or 30s and get worse at a rapid rate. Exogenous environmental factors may aggravate the clinical picture in a predisposed individual. These include severe stress, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, and scalp skin conditions. Androgenetic type alopecia in women has been associated mainly with hormonal disorders, with polycystic ovary syndrome and with disorders in the functioning of the thyroid gland.
Trichoscopy and/or hirizogram is the most basic diagnostic method as it allows the dermatologist to assess the number, density and quality of hair follicles. It is a non-invasive method that is also used to monitor treatment results.
The dermatologist may also perform a pull test to assess the amount of hair loss and perhaps blood tests to check for nutritional and hormonal factors.
If medical causes and hormonal disorders are found, they will need to be addressed for androgenetic alopecia treatment to be effective.
Treatment may be non-invasive and include topical medication. This mainly concerns minoxidil and finasteride.
At the same time, complementary treatment can be recommended that enhances the effect of treatment with scalp mesotherapy and autologous RPR mesotherapy. Some patients, however, improve only by transplanting hairs from healthy to the affected area.
